The Catholic University of America is a medium-sized, research-oriented school located in Washington, D.C. It has a diverse population of approximately 2,400 undergraduate and 3,600 graduate students representing all of the American states and more than 100 other countries. The buildings include an athletic complex with swimming pool, racquetball courts, dance studio and fitness center. Library holdings total more than 1.3 million volumes, with outstanding collections in philosophy, Irish literature, Semitics, canon law and theology. CUA is a private coeducational college that is open to people of all religious faiths. Conveniently located two stops from the city centre at the Brookland-CUA station using the Metrorail (subway), Washington's modern mass transit system, CUA is within minutes of Capitol Hill, the National Mall, the Library of Congress and D.C. museums.

CUA is easily accessible to both air and rail ports in Washington, D.C. The Washington Flyer shuttle bus departs the Baltimore Washington and Dulles International Airports every half hour between 5.20 a.m. and 11 p.m. for downtown Washington D.C., making stops at major hotels and the Farragut Square or McPherson Square Metrorail stations on the Orange and Blue lines. At the beginning of 2001 the fare was $16 one way, or $26 round trip. Discounts were available for three or more passengers. The cab fare from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was approximately $15 at the end of 2000. For people arriving in Washington from Amtrak at Union Station, at the end of 2000 the cab fare from Union Station to CUA was approximately $7.
