FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS - August 7th 2006

±       Why should the world pay attention to what our Holy Books teach?

±       Is fundamentalist literalism the only way to preserve the authority of sacred texts?

±       How do we make a faithful response to the claims of science?

±       Can we balance our own faith tradition’s exclusive readings of Scriptures with the challenge of other world faiths?

±       Is Australian society secular, superstitious, spirituality-seeking – or all three?

Seeking wisdom to address such questions,

The Centre for Theology, Science and Culture

invites Submissions for Presentation

at a Conference on Multifaith Scholarship:

Sacred Scripture in Today’s World

'Journeying with the Christ' - A five part, ecumenical resource from the gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark tells the reader that journeying with Jesus is good news in spite of all the challenges along the way. From the moment of God's audible presence at Jesus' baptism in the wilderness, through the Galilee and to a high mountain beyond where God's affirmation of the journey is again heard we will follow alongside the named disciples. But the expectations of the earliest followers that the good news would disclose power, privilege and instant gratification are short lived as the journey takes a sharp turn to Jerusalem resulting in loneliness, pain, separation, doubt and finally the scandal of execution.

The story does not end at Calvary, however. From an empty tomb the best news comes to those who have dared to hang in with Jesus in through thick and thin. The opportunity is given for the journey to begin all over again - this time with our eyes wide open.

Labyrinth

On the 25 th August at 12.30-p.m. there will be the official opening on the labyrinth made in the grounds of the Adelaide College of Divinity. The project was coordinated by Jo Mason and Vicky Balabanski.

Cedar Prest a Labyrinth Facilitator trained at Grace Cathedral in 2003 designed a path specifically to suit the College and to fit into the lawn outside the Chapel.

One enters the circular walk around a chalice form and after many turns in the wide path ends up in the central wafer. A Pomegranate tree has been planted in the centre to symbolise life. Pavers dug into the lawn have delineated the path. Volunteers working under the direction of Cedar, Jo and Vicky have done the work, and are currently mosaicing the chalice and centre.

The Labyrinth is an important addition to the college and makes publicly available this valuable meditational tool.

A labyrinth is a spiral path, which returns. It becomes a metaphor for a spiritual journey to the centre to seek soul eroded in the daily process of living. It was once considered a symbolic substitute for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There is a connection way back to the archetypal legend of Theseus and the Minotaur, a Hero's journey to the underworld.

The Labyrinth is a very ancient pattern, a path spiralling by twists and turns to a meditational centre. There one pauses to listen and later to walk by the same path back to the entrance. Concentrating on following the path, one is able to lose the constant chatter of the mind and it is believed that the unpredictable left and right turns help to balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This produces a calm meditational state in which one is able to see deeper life issues more clearly and discover a personal sense of direction.

It is hoped that all who use ACD will come to walk and benefit from this Labyrinth and that it may be a point of introduction for parish groups who may come to visit for guided walks and workshops. Cedar is willing to offer such workshops (ph. 83271894).

Come and celebrate, walk and open this welcome addition to the communal life of ACD.
