Sinai

Sinai is the peninsula of land between Israel and Egypt. It is through this area that the Israelites passed after being liberated from Egypt en route to their promised land. Here, too, Moses encountered God and had the "Ten Words" revealed to him. The traditional spot is "Jebel Musa" ("The Mountain of Moses", Mt Sinai, 3000 metres high).

Twentieth-century excavations of Sinai have uncovered a well-organized system of fortresses and caravan stations for security and ease of travel.
