Ian joined the department in 1970, having previously been a tutor at Macquarie University after the completion of his Honours Degree. His first publication was in the journal Philosophy of Science in 1969, a paper with Wal Suchting titled ‘Force and “Natural Motion”’. After coming to Flinders, Ian developed his current primary field of teaching and research interest in Social Philosophy, including Philosophy of Economics and Legal Philosophy. Ian has book Analytical and Dialectical Marxism (Ashgate, 1993) and several coedited books, including The New Industrial Relations in Australia (Federation Press, 1995) with Chris Provis and The Quality of Death: Euthenasia in Australia (Flinders University Centre for Applied Philosophy, 1996) with Lynda Burns. Recent papers include “Overall Freedom and Constraint”, Inquiry, Aid: Are We Doing Our Bit?’ The Australian Journal of Human Rights , “The Economic Cell-Form”, Historical Materialism, and ‘Omissions and Preventions as Cases of Genuine Causation’.
