What we have done to date...
The Centre for Applied Philosophy's principal activity is organizing
conferences or colloquia on topical public policy issues and organizing
publication of collections on issues, including collections of conference
or colloquia papers. The following are an example of the types of issues
addressed so far...
February 2001
The Centre ran a conference entitled "Saving the Murray".
February 2000
The Centre ran a series of lectures on Science and Designer Lifestyles
in conjunction with the Centre for Lifelong Learning and Development.
The series covered the impact of science and biotechnology on lifestyle
choices. There were five session in all covering cloning, designer bodies,
designer babies, designer drugs and designer foods. It is planned to publish
the lectures in a simple format available to the public.
February, 1999
The Centre ran a conference entitled The Future of Solidarity. Preparations
are underway to publish the proceedings.
October 1998
The Centre appointed an administrative assistant to establish and co-ordinate
the Philosophy for Schools program. The aim is to re-institute philosophy
as a teaching topic at high school. A proposal has been submitted to SAABSSA
for approval. This has been successful and plans are now underway to devise
a curriculum and organise training workshops for teachers.
July 1998
The Centre hosted the Annual AAHPSSS Conference. There were 45 papers
altogether and the special Dyason lecturer was Professor John Norton,
talking on Maxwell's Demon.
November 1997
The Centre ran a conference on "The Ethos of the University: West
and Beyond", co-hosted by FIST (Flinders Institute for the Study
of Teaching). Publication of proceedings is complete and available on
request. Cost is $20.
February 1997
The Centre also organised and co-ordinated a workshop on Asperger's Syndrome.
This workshop involved representatives from F.A.C.S., I.D.S.C., the Autism
Association, Office of the Public Advocate, the Flinders Philosophy Dept.
and the School of Disability Studies.
January 1997
Publication of the collection of papers on Euthanasia was finalised. The
title of the collection is "Quality of Death: Euthanasia in Australia",
edited by Lynda Burns and Ian Hunt. It is now available through Unibooks,
Flinders University for AUS$12.00 a copy.
September 1996
The Centre organized a Cultural Heritage Conference in collaboration with
the Legal Studies discipline . The conference was entitled Cultural Heritage:
Values and Rights. Edited papers from the proceedings were published in
1998 and are available from UniBooks or the Centre.
1994
The Centre of Apllied Philosophy and the School of Management, Uni.S.A.
organised a conference on Industrial Relations. A collection of essays
entitled "The New Industrial Relation in Australia", edited
by Ian Hunt and Chris Provis, was published by Federation Press in 1995.
