The Master of Education (Special Education)is a professional degree program designed to extend the competence of teachers to educate and support students with special educational needs in a range of educational settings. The program provides students with advanced skills and concepts in special education and the opportunity to undertake in-depth study in specialised areas. This course has proved to be especially valuable to teachers in remote areas since study can be completed entirely in distance mode.

PATTERN OF STUDY
Students holding a relevant four-year degree or equivalent normally complete the Master of Special Education in one to one-and-a-half-years full-time or three to four years part-time.

Students normally complete between five and seven topics (courses) depending on previous study or professional experience in special education. Part-time students normally study one topic each semester. Topic materials are sent to students at the beginning of each semester.

Students in British Columbia need to complete a coursework project in special education in order to meet requirements of the Teacher Qualification Service. A coursework project is equivalent to two topics and is normally completed over two semesters when studying part-time.

AREAS OF STUDY
Topics are available in the following areas of special education: intellectual disability, physical and multiple disabilities, behaviour management, collaborative consultation, learning difficulties, assessment and programming, contemporary issues in special education, language and literacy development and interventions, hearing impairment, vision impairment, technology and disability.
