Occupational Health Safety and Welfare

The following information was reported by the Chair to the Faculty OHS&W meeting held on Wednesday, 4 November.

On 26 August we had an internal audit conducted by external auditors. The scope of this audit focussed on Training Needs Analysis, Hazardous Substances, Manual Handling and Plant Safety against University procedures.  I am happy to report that only one non-conformance was reported.  This was in the Drama Studio and the faculty was aware of the problem and have taken steps to rectify the situation.  No results have been received as yet regarding the Workcover audit in Sept/Oct.  Diving was the only area in the Faculty that was being reviewed.  Thank you for your hard work.

Training Needs Analysis (TNA) templates have been forwarded to Schools.  Management Representatives are reminded that TNA’s need to be maintained on an ongoing basis at a local level, together with Plant Registers and Hazard Registers.

There are new procedures for Rehabilitation and Independent Contractors which can be found on EHLT OHS website.

Scott Castledine has resigned as the Chief Fire Warden at Sturt Campus as there are very few of EHLT staff remaining at Sturt.  A replacement for him has not yet been appointed from Health Sciences.  In the meantime, in the case of an emergency, Security becomes the key contact.

We are in the process of reviewing field activity procedures and forms.  It is anticipated that the new procedure will take place from January 2010.  To date a total of 168 field activities have taken place.
