10 October Mark Halsey ‘Serving the "second" sentence: Client perspectives of post-custodial life in South Australia’ The seminar will present the main themes to emerge from initial and follow-up interviews with young males aged 15 to 20 years subjected to repeat cycles of incarceration and release across juvenile and adult custodial spheres in South Australia from 2003 to 2006. It will focus specifically on how young men conceive and narrate the difficulties of the second sentence in terms of issues centering on accommodation, drug and alcohol use, employment, peer associations and administrative factors. The talk will conclude by arguing that the high rates of recidivism and reincarceration have as much to do with risky systems of offender management as they do with attempts to manage or surveill risky or dangerous individuals.
