Career: Michele Slatter came to Flinders Law School in 2000. Before that she worked briefly in the City of London and then held Lectureships in England, at Anglia University and the Norwich Law School, University of East Anglia, and a Senior Lectureship/Associate Professorship at Canterbury University in New Zealand.
Research: Since moving to Flinders Michele has focused her research interests towards Housing Law and Policy and is an active researcher with the Southern Research Centre of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI). Her main area of interest is ‘successful tenancies’. She has explored facets of this topic through a number of grant-aided projects, including studies of eviction, anti-social behaviour, private rental assistance, tenant recognition schemes and advice and information strategies. She has also completed some advocacy research on sex discrimination in housing. Currently Michele is looking further into the topical and fraught issues of anti-social behaviour and hoarding and housing risk as well as tenure change.
Teaching: In addition to the Housing Law elective, Michele teaches introductory and advanced topics on Torts. She has also taught Ageing, Disability, Mental Health and the Law and has contributed to Property Law Concepts.
Professional/community activity: Michele is a member of the editorial group of the Alternative Law Journal. She’s also the Book Review Editor of the Flinders Journal of Law Reform. She has a long-standing commitment to linking academic law and ‘real life’. Since arriving in South Australia she's worked on policy-relevant projects for the South Australian Justice portfolio and Housing portfolio and the South Australian Community Housing Authority. She convenes the Women’s Housing Caucus of South Australia and has held a range of positions within housing organisations, including being a member of the Board of the South Australian Housing Trust from 2004-7.
