Legal Practice Management [Placement]
Frequently Asked Questions

I understand with the placement topic we do part of the topic in February. If I do the actual placement part in either January or February the following year has too much time passed between segments of the topic or is that ok to do?

The first part of the topic (Law Practice 1) will run from 5 to 9 February 2007.
The second part of the topic is the Placement.
The third part of the topic is Law Practice 2 (there is a choice of dates).

It is usual that you would complete the placement within the calendar year that you are enrolled in the topic. However, it may be possible in exceptional circumstances to get permission to have an incomplete grade recorded for the topic, and allow you to complete the Placement in Jan/Feb of the following year.

When do we enrol in the topic to complete the Practice Management subject?
The enrolment period will commence on 4 December 2006. You must enrol by 15 December 2006.

If we need help finding a placement what forms do we need to fill out?
Below is an extract from the Law Handbook which will be available in a few weeks:

Placement:

All students enrolled in the topic Legal Practice Management must complete a work experience Placement of 225 hours in a legal office. Students may commence their Placement any time from 12 February 2007 (after Law Practice 1). There are three possible ways of organising a Placement:

  1. Find your own Placement and do it at any time after successful completion of Law Practice 1 (complete Form 3A from the back of this Handbook); or
  2. Complete your Placement within your regular employment any time after successful completion of Law Practice 1 (complete Form 3A from the back of this Handbook); or
  3. Ask the Law Society to allocate a Placement during one of the 3 Placement blocks during the year (complete Form 3B from the back of this Handbook).

All students in this topic must complete a Placement form (either 3Aor 3B) and deliver the form to Rachel Spencer by Monday 22 January 2007 at the latest. Please submit forms earlier if possible. Placements are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

You will have to maintain a Placement Handbook over the course of the Placement. The Handbook includes a record of attendance and sets out a number of specific tasks which must be completed on the Placement. You will receive your Placement Handbook on Day 5 of Law Practice 1.

If you are negotiating your own Placement, it is helpful to show the Placement Handbook to prospective supervisors so that the requirements of the Placement are clear.

Further details about Placement and a complete preparation program will be provided on Friday 9 February, 2007 during Law Practice 1.

I was hoping to do my placement over the Christmas break 2007…
The Placement is part of the topic called Legal Practice Management. The first part of that topic, called Law Practice 1, will be run from 5 to 9 February 2007. This topic involves preparation for the placement.

You may not start a placement until you have completed Law Practice 1.

In practical terms, this means that you may not start a placement until 12 February 2007.

Is the only option with the Law Society the week beginning 5 February 2007? I know in previous years a date was available some 2-3 weeks later and this would be quite helpful to me if that were the case again this year.
In 2007, Law Practice 1 will be offered between 5 and 9 February, inclusive. It will not be offered at any other time.

When do I do Law Practice 2?
Law Practice 2 is taught over a full day and there will be a choice of three days:
23 March
24 May
14 September

Students must pick the date which is closest to the completion of their placement. If you are not doing your placement until semester 2, it is best to do the Placement on 14 September.
Rachel Spencer and Jenny Ayliffe will keep a list of students and their preferences for dates. First come, first served.

For "Law Practice 2", can I do the 23 March session if I have not already finished my placement?  The Law Handbook does not seem to be clear on this point (I.e. it is "designed" to be completed after the placement, but is this a requirement?)

The Law Practice 2 session on 23 March is reserved for students who have completed their placement or are close to completion at that time.  If you have nearly finished I would be happy to put your name on the list. In any event, it's first come, first served. If you don’t give me a preference, I will allocate you to a session.
