I am a doctoral student at the Flinders Univesity of South Australia, and the provisional title of my thesis is Popular Literature and Postmodernism. In my work I am looking at the contemporary thriller in English, from the point of view of the current philosophical/artistic direction in thinking - postmodernism.
In Romania, which is my home, I am a senior lecturer at the Transilvania University of Brasov. I graduated in 1985 from the University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. My four year degree would be the equivalent of a BA in the English or Australian system, and I obtained it on presenting a thesis (the equivalent of Honours) on Shakespeare's Art of Buffoonery.
From what I have read, I believe that Garry Disher's is one of the most convincing, refined and sensitive Australian voices at present. In my thesis I am looking at his Wyatt novels - the author's 'tough' genre alter ego. In my opinion his thrillers can be rightfully placed next to the most accomplished international productions of the kind by authors such as James Lee Burke and Barbara Vine.
