Teaching Experience at Flinders University
Police Checks Mandatory Reporting Practicum Administration (in development)

Teaching Experience is an important component of the Bachelor of Education combined degree. Teaching is a professional discipline and pre-service student teachers need the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective practitioners.

The two components of the Teaching Experience program are School Experience and Teaching Practicum.

Over the four years of the BEd, students will be placed in a school for a School Experience of 10 days per semester linked to an education topic in their second year, followed by a Teaching Practicum block of 4 weeks in their third year and a Teaching Practicum block of 6 weeks plus 10 days in their fourth year.

Graduate Entry students will complete the teaching experience placements over a period of two years.

Pre-service student teachers are allocated to government, Catholic and Independent schools/centres for periods of Professional Practice.

All placements of pre-service teachers in schools will be made by School of Education Teaching Experience Centre placement officers. On no account should pre-service student teachers directly approach schools/centres to arrange their own placement.

For information on the basic structures of the teaching experience blocks for Junior Primary/Primary, Middle School and Secondary please click here.

Teaching Practicum

Junior Primary/Primary, Upper Primary/Lower Secondary (Middle School), Secondary

The Teaching Practicum program is a block of four weeks (TP1) in the third year of the combined degree and six weeks (TP2) in the fourth year (first and second year graduate entry), during which time the pre-service student teacher works full time in a classroom or classrooms with a teacher/mentor. Pre-service teachers will be assessed and will receive a written report at the conclusion of the teaching practicum.

An optional Teaching Practicum Elective program of either four weeks or 120 hours duration may also be negotiated by third or fourth year (first or second year graduate entry) pre-service teachers.

Teaching Practicum Reports

At the completion of the Teaching Practicum, a hard copy of the report, signed by the appropriate school personnel, should be posted or delivered to the Teaching Experience Centre.

(Please Note: Reports are not required for School Experience.)

Students should collect a certified copy of their report from the Teaching Experience Centre after the reports have been checked and processed.

School Experience

Junior Primary/Primary, Upper Primary/Lower Secondary (Middle School), Secondary

The School Experience program is intended to provide the students with a means by which they can link the work of teachers in schools with their studies at university. It is not intended that a school experience student would spend their time in a school with just one teacher.

School experience pre-service student teachers are expected to spend a minimum of ten days per semester in a school setting during their second year of the four year combined degree (or first year graduate entry.

School Experience students may undertake a range of non-teaching activities in the school with a focus on learning about the operation of schools and Teachers’ Work.
