Special Corners

Creating special corners is another way to make the classroom organised, productive and aesthetically pleasing.  Special corners have a theme, for example you might like to have a library corner, music corner, theme of the week area, group work/discussion area or a computer corner.  The type and number of corners will depend on the space and resources available, the needs of your children and what type of atmosphere you wish to create.

Library Corner

These can contain pillows or beanbags with a book stand containing books relating to the theme of the week or the particular topic studied that term.   It could include student created books and special books brought in by students.  Having such an area allows for students to use it independently to research, when they complete work early or during silent reading or free activity time.

Music Corner

This can be a place in the room where musical instruments are stored, perhaps there might be some audio equipment where chidren can listen to tapes or CD's of various kinds.  This could be where you play music from during lessons and the corner might be decorated with musical posters that are of interest to children or that children can obtain information for future projects.

Theme of the Week Corner

These areas are particularly important for student learning as they can contain a variety of resources that help explain a particular topic studied for that week (or term).  For example, studies on asian countries could see a display table with books, videos, music, posters/maps relating to a certain country or visual hands on examples of asian culture (e.g. traditional costumes, food, games).  You are only limited by your own creativity and willingness to invest effort and try something different.
