Lighting
Lighting may be an area that teachers may not have much control
over. However, it is important to remember that natural lighting
or full spectrum lighting is better than the bright fluorescent bulbs.
Bad lighting can reduce student energy levels, cause eyesight problems,
students may lose focus quickly (Tracy, 2000) and on task work is minimal.
Making optimal use of natural light keeps the room bright
and alive, encouraging children to be alert and ready for each task.
However, it is important to remember that some children
may prefer or work better in dimly lit areas. In these cases it may
be more appropriate to create some low light areas by using book cases,
plants or other furniture. This may reduce restlessness and hyperactivity
(Scholastic, 2002).
