Colour
Colour stimulates the brain and using it in the classroom,
through decorations, posters, student work and when writing, brings the
room alive. It also creates a friendly, happy, warm and inviting
vibe that portrays a productive learning and teaching environment.
Because some colours have different
effects it is suggested to use red, black, blue or purples on self-made
posters, white boards and overheads as these have been found to lower blood
pressure and lessen aggravation on the brain (Tracy, 2000).
Yellow or orange are good for brightening
up rooms and also as backgrounds for posters. However,
be cautious of using neon colours, studies on ADD/ADHD students have found
that these may have negative effects (Tracy, 2000).
Use of colours can also be helpful
to students when taking notes. Allowing them to use different coloured
thin point markers may help them make connections and recall information
later (Tracy, 2000).
