Observations

Yr 1 / 2 || Yr 3 /4 || Yr 4 / 5 || Yr 6 / 7

Comments from teachers

While on Teaching Practicum the following examples of Drama were observed:

Year 1/2 - Performance Poetry

At the biweekly School Assembly the children did a poetry performance.

The children had worked on preparing a large poster to act as a backdrop to their performance.

As one child read a line from the poem, three other children acted out the words. Then the next group would perform the next line, and so on. All children made up their own actions.

The children had learnt about the importance of simple props, reading in public and acting out the words of the poem.

In this instance the children were provided with an opportunity to respond in a meaningful way to a poem. From an educational perspective, this assisted in their appreciation and understanding of literacy.

Year 3/4 - Mime

The teacher set the theme as "emotions".

Children brainstormed to come up with several emotions and these were recorded on a white board. They discussed how these emotions could be seen on a person's face and in their 'body language'.

A simple scene of a bus was set up. The activity was that the bus driver would start out with an empty bus and as he picked up passengers he and all the other passengers would take on the emotion of the latest passenger. At the end of the activity each student had to tell the class what emotion he or she was conveying.

The activity was enthusiastically embraced by all the students both as actors and as audience.

Year 4/5 - Improvisation

Teacher split the class into several small groups and then set several 'scenes'.

Each group was given a 'scene' and given five minutes to come up with an informal script/story.

With no props, each group would perform their 'play' to the rest of the class.

With no formal script the children were allowed to let their imaginations run wild and so the enthusiasm of each of the groups was only limited by the short performance time given to each group.

This activity provokes spontaneity and quick thinking.

Year 4/5 - Video Lesson

Children had studied Australian Explorers as a Society and Environment topic.

One group researched Bourke and Wills.

After they had presented the findings of their research to the class, the class watched a video of Bourke and Wills.

They then critically examined the video content in relation to what information they had discovered during their research.

Year 6/7 - Scripted Play

At the biweekly School Assembly the children performed a scripted play.

The children had researched Federation in the lead up to the presentation of the Federation Medallions. Together with their teacher they had prepared a script, appropriate simple props along with background music. The play was rehearsed several times and then performed in front of the entire school.

On speaking with the students it was clear that they had gained a greater understanding of 'Federation'. This was not achieved merely through the amount of time spent covering the topic, but rather the enthusiasm a re-enactement of it generated.
