EIGHT-STEP DEVELOPING SEQUENCE

 

The following is a table showing the Developmental stages of children's drawing. Please keep in mind that the ages are general guidelines and that children will enter each stage at their own pace.

These stages appear in all children everywhere in the world in the same order. You will notice that this sequence is similar to the steps children take in developing physical, cognitive and even writing skills.

May cover paper with layers of color

May put a single scribble on a paper

Makes basic shapes

Combines two shapes, often the circle and the cross to make "mandala"

Draws "suns"

Draws human as circle with arms and legs

5-6

Draws heads of animals in profile

Draws trees

Makes pictorial drawings

Includes baseline in pictures
