Gender Differences

The most striking differences between boys and girls' drawings is that, when given a free choice, boys tend to draw men and girls women. Our collection of drawings from children aged 4-6 seem to agree with this theory.

Boys-

Draw male figures with exaggerated male characteristics. Details are kept to a minimum. Between the ages of nine-twelve, boys like to draw vehicles, especially cars, trucks, ships, rockets etc. However, teachers and parents start to recognise this as early as four years of age.

Girls-

Have difficulties drawing males and often complain that the males in their pictures look like girls. Females drawn by girls glamorize feminine aspects. Girls seem to be superior to boys in the use of the mediun and technique and more likely to show details. They draw what is pretty and comment poetically on their pictures.
