Welcome to the School of Education

Welcome to the School of Education at Flinders University. The School provides a range of initial teacher education options, together with postgraduate coursework options, a professional doctorate and research higher degrees.

The initial teacher education options include a range of double degree opportunities to train as an early childhood, junior primary, primary, middle school or secondary teacher. One of the many innovative approaches used in the teacher training program is the incorporation of content into a series of integrated topics rather than the traditional series of segregated topics in which the student is left to make the links between areas of content. In 2009 the traditional graduate entry program will be replaced by a Master of Teaching over a two year period providing initial teacher training for graduates in other disciplines. At the graduate entry and in the new MTeach program, students can also train in areas of special education.

At the postgraduate level, there are a range of Graduate Certificate strands available to provide innovative learning opportunities for teachers and managers. These include special education, gifted education, leadership and management, Asian studies, mathematics and science education. In 2008 a new strand of the Graduate Certificate in the area of student behaviour has commenced which explores the ranges of behaviour needs of students and the ways these can be addressed in educational settings. Within the Master of Education, a similar range of topics is available for those seeking a professional coursework degree that can also blend coursework with research methods and a research project.

The Doctor of Education program provides those seeking a coursework and research degree with the opportunity to explore their field of education in depth and to engage in research that relates directly to their interests. Similarly the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees provide the opportunity to pursue research in specific areas of interest.

Through our teaching, research and professional activities both on-campus and internationally, the School of Education aims to be at the forefront of educational change.
