Drama Theory

First Year Topics

Students studying Drama in the BA and the BCA take two Drama Theory topics in the first year.

DRAM1001 Drama 1A: First Stages is an introductory view of Drama, beginning with the classical theatre of Athens in the 5th century BCE, working through to the work of Shakespeare, Moliere, and then to the developments in the 19th century with Buchner, Ibsen and Chekhov, playwrights who created much of the drama we know today. We also look at the influence of the twentieth century pioneer Bertolt Brecht. In this topic, students are introduced to general principles of performance analysis and historical research. The course assessment includes essays, tutorial presentations and review writing.

DRAM1002Drama 1B: Bodies of Work examines a range of modern and postmodern dramatic works from the Theatre of the Absurd and the works of Beckettand Ionesco, Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty, and the feminist theatre of Caryl Churchill. We also discuss performance for the camera - in television drama and cinema - and conclude with some recent Australian plays.

Second and Third Year Topics

Drama offers an extensive second- and third-year program. This continues a theory stream from Drama I with two second year topics on Modern Theatre.

DRAM2005 Modern Theatre: The Rise of the Director looks at the emergence of the director in modern theatre in Europe and the United Kingdom from 1880 to 1950. DRAM2006 Modern Theatre: Directors and Directions examines the diversity of theatrical activity in the United States, the UK and Europe from 1930 onwards.

In third year, DRAM3507 Theories of Performance introduces students to a range of theories, concepts and ideas for analysing performance practice. DRAM3508 Live Arts and Performance looks at the aesthetics and ethics of contemporary performance in an international field.
