Greek Conference 2009



First Year Subjects

Note: Each of the following topics has 2 separate language sections depending on the background of the student. Section A is for students who have had no previous formal instruction in the language. Section B is for students who have had formal instruction in the language in High School. Students will be streamed in each section within the topic.

Modern Greek 1: Part 1 (Semeser 1)

Content:

  1. Language: 3 hours per week.

    Section A: systematic introduction to the Greek language through class interaction for gradually improving communication skills (all grammar explanations in English);

    Section B: further development of conversational and compositional skills based on a variety of contemporary themes (Greek culture and the media, youth issues in Greece and Australia).

  2. Culture: 1 hour per week.

    Lectures and class discussion on Greek Culture and Society as viewed by Europeans, Greeks in Greece and Australia. Culture is discussed from the perspectives of cultural anthropology, culture studies, linguistics and history.

Assessment:

    Regular class assessment for the language sections; class project for the culture section.

Modern Greek 1: Part 2 (Semester 2)

Content:

  1. Language: 3 hours per week.

    Section A: review of the fundamental aspects of Greek grammar and introduction to the writing of simple passages, further class interaction for the improvement of communication skills.

    Section B: further improvement of sentence structure, paragraph connection, and cohesion in expression based on contemporary issues, research and bibliography techniques.

  2. Culture: 1 hour per week.

    Lectures, demonstrations and class discussion on aspects of Greek culture from antiquity to the present (includes folkloric and contemporary culture, mythology, history, music and dance).

Assessment:

Regular class assessment for the language sections; class project for the culture section.
