Ponomaryova І. The Greeks of Priazovye: ethno-national processes in the scope of transformation of traditional culture. Presentation submitted to the 8th International Conference. The present presentation is a special tribute to integrated historical and ethnographic research of Priazovye Greeks’ traditional culture of the late 18th-early 21st century. The author has carried out comparative and generalizing analysis of the demographic condition, the dialects as well as the ritual and the musical habits of the ethnos under research. The research evidences the fact that their history as well as their material and spiritual culture include Old Greek, Turkic and Slavic elements. The Greeks of Mariupol, living in Priazovye, were named after the city of Mariupol they had once founded. In 1778 the Greeks migrated from the Crimean Khanate. As a result, 18.000 Greeks left the Crimea to settle down in Priazovye. Nowadays there are 78.000 Greeks divided into two ethnic groups: the Hellenic-phonic and the Turkic-phonic Greeks.
