Title Waiting for the Barbarians

Details
The paper will compare Cavafy's poem 'Waiting for the Barbarians' to Coetzee's novel with the same title. It will shown that both Cavafy and Coetzee imply that the barbarians have already arrived. It will be argued that this allows Cavafy and Coetzee to develop a notion of waiting that is not a 'waiting for' something specific, but a waiting as a state of being. This will highlight the philosophical import of their works.
