A great deal of good quality research arises from the initiative and interests of individuals working outside of key government underwater culutral heritage management agencies. Many of these are researchers with no government affilliation - volunteers, historians and descendants of seafarers. Others are researchers within affiliated government agencies, such as transport and Navy but whose contributions to the understanding of underwater cultural heritage are equally invaluable.

This session will focus on and celebrate the achievments of this important group of researchers and writers.
