Archaeology is a diverse and rapidly growing field of employment both in Australia and internationally.  Two key areas of employment for graduates with archaeological skills, particularly those with extensive field experience and the applied knowledge gained through coursework postgraduate degrees, are the government and consultancy sectors.  A recent survey by the Australian Archaeological Association (AAA), however, has identified some significant skill gaps in current undergraduate university training which impede the transition to successful archaeological employment.  Competence in archaeological field methods has been identified as one of the core sets of skills required by new graduates who wish to move into the workplace, but there are few opportunities for students to gain such training and experience in field methods and other archaeological skills at an advanced graduate level.  Other gaps identified by the AAA survey included rock art recording and conservation, forensic archaeology and Indigenous archaeology.

The Graduate Program in Archaeology at Flinders University has been designed to fill such gaps with a wide ranging and vocationally oriented postgraduate coursework degree.  The graduate program focuses on several interrelated areas of applied archaeological expertise, including:

  • archaeological field practice, including advanced field methods
  • rock art recording and conservation
  • Indigenous archaeology and
  • cultural heritage management.

The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Archaeology all provide opportunities for you to improve your skills in these areas, add additional archaeological skills and knowledge that complement your existing knowledge, and expand this through a selection of carefully chosen and closely interrelated electives.

If you have not studied archaeology before, this program will allow you to develop an understanding of the discipline and follow your interests in areas ranging across Indigenous archaeology, maritime archaeology, archaeological science and historic archaeology.

Entry Requirements

The normal minimum entry requirement for all three post-graduate Archaeology courses is a three-year undergraduate degree from an approved tertiary institution, majoring in archaeology, anthropology or another related discipline.  However, applicants with other qualifications may be accepted under certain circumstances, at the discretion of the Course Coordinator. Please contact Dr Lynley Wallis for advice if you are unsure whether you meet the requirements.
