Currently Enrolled Students in the Graduate Program in Archaeology
The Graduate Program in Archaeology was first made available to students in 2007, with an initial intake of 12 students. In 2008 we have more than 20 students enrolled in the Archaeology graduate program. The following list of students enrolled in the program will give you an idea of the kinds of people who are studying this degree and their backgrounds:
Graduate Certificate of Archaeology
- Donald Kerr – Donald currently works as a Cultural Heritage and Native Title Liaison Officer for the Dept of Main Roads in Queensland. He already holds a Graduate Diploma in Archaeological Heritage and is currently completing a Master of Arts (Archaeology) at the University of New England.
- Brendon Frahn - Brendon completed a Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University in 2001 and is pursuing his studies as a full-time student.
- Zach King – Zach commenced a Graduate Certificate in Archaeology in Semester 1, 2008 and has now progressed on to a Master of Maritime Archaeology. Zach is from Ohio in the United States of America, and recently attended the ARCH8305 Archaeology Field Methods topic run at the Coorong - his experiences about the field school can be seen on the student testimonial page.
- Steven Lake - Steven joins us from England, where he received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Plymouth University, majoring in history with American studies. After completing the Graduate Certificate in Archaeology Steven will go on to enter the Maritime Archaeology graduate program here at Flinders University.
Graduate Diploma of Archaeology
- Georgina Ashley - Georgina completed a Bachelor of Archaeology degree at Flinders University in 2007. She is undertaking her Graduate Diploma in Archaeology as a full-time student.
- Victoria Baylem - Victoria completed a Bachelor of Arts with a major in history at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. She has previously been employed at a Collections Manager with the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery and as a Heritage Officer with the City of Gosnells Museum, and will be completing her Graduate Diploma full-time.
- Adam Caldwell – Adam holds a Bachelor of Applied Geospatial and Information Technology majoring in Archaeology from Flinders and has a keen interest in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Archaeology.
- Dylan Furner - Dylan completed a Bachelor of Archaeology degree at Flinders University in 2006.
- Joanne Keane - Joanne completed a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Archaeology and Anthropology at James Cook University in 2007. She is currently employed on a part-time basis with Gordon Grimwade and Associates as an archaeologist, and will be completing her Graduate Diploma as a part-time external student.
- Rita Kucera – In 2004 Rita completed a Bachelor of Archaeology degree at Flinders University. She is undertaking her Graduate Diploma in Archaeology as a part-time student, though as of May 2008 has temporarily suspended from her studies having gained a temporary contract working with the Heritage Branch of Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation in Adelaide.
- Kara Lee - in 2007 Kara completed a Bachelor of Archaeology degree at Flinders University, and is pursuing her Graduate Diploma as a full-time student.
- Jenefer Marquis - Jen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Development with Honours from Murdoch University in Perth. She has a particular interest in Indigenous issues, and hopes to pursue some of the specialist rock art related topics in her program of study.
- Samantha Nation - Sam completed a Bachelor of Archaeology from Flinders University in 2007, and is pursuing her Graduate Diploma on a part-time basis.
- Bronwyn Phillips – Bron recently completed a Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University. She has upgraded to the Graduate Diploma in Archaeology from a Graduate Certificate as a part-time student in order to gain knowledge in a much wider range of topics than she studied as an undergraduate.
- Rhiannon Tabaka – Rhiannon graduated with a Bachelor of Archaeology degree from Flinders University in 2005 and commenced in the Graduate Diploma program as a part-time student in Semester 1, 2007. Rhiannon is deferring her studies for one year while she takes up an internship position in Mongolia as an Assistant Art Curator, after which time she will return to Australia to complete her degree.
- Suzanne Thompson-Wright - Suzanne formerly completed a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Archaeology and Palaeontology in 2000. Since then she has held a number of positions, including with the Dept of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, Dept of Agiculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority, as well as running her own private consulting company. She joined the Graduate Diploma program in S1, 2008 as an external student, and completed a Cultural Heritage Practicum with consulting firm ACHM.
- Kim Tuovinen – Kim holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Classical Archaeology and History from the University of Sydney, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from Charles Sturt University. He commenced the Graduate Diploma in Archaeology as a part-time student in November 2007, winning the inaugural Ecophyte Technologies Prize in Archaeological Geophysics for the best result in ARCH8307.
Master of Archaeology
- Karen Alexander - Karen completed a Bachelor of Archaeology with Honours in 2008 from the Department of Archaeology at Flinders University. She is pursuing her Master of Archaeology on a part-time basis in Semester 1, having completed a summer internship in Tasmania and begun a graduate internship with the SA Department of Environment and Heritage in 2008.
- Michael Bendon – Michael has a BA and MA from Macquarie in Ancient History/Archaeology, and a Dip Teach., MA and EdD from UTS. He has worked on archaeological sites in the Middle East for 20 years, as well as on sites in Portugal, Germany and Crete.
- Roger Halliday – Roger holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Aboriginal Studies from the University of South Australia, in addition to a Graduate Certificate in Business from Edith Cowan University. He is a former police officer and diving instructor, who is interested in Indigenous heritage and maritime archaeology. He commenced the Master of Archaeology in Semester 2, 2007 as a part-time student.
- Tanja Harding - Tanja is from Taroom in Queensland and has recently returned there after six years living in the UK. She holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Welsh history and archaeology from the University of Wales Bangor. While completing her undergraduate degree she volunteered on numerous Neolithic/Bronze Age excavations before gaining paid employment with Gwyned Archaeological Trust in her third year of study. Tanja has returned to Australia to learn about Indigenous archaeology and rock art particularly.
- Julia Garnaut - Julia is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts in Australian Studies and English at Flinders University. She will commence in the Master of Archaeology program as a full-time student in Semester 2, 2008.
- Crystal Henry – Crystal is from Washington in the USA. She is currently undertaking her Master of Archaeology as a full-time student, and will be completing her Masters thesis during Semester 1, 2008.
- Rebecca Holland – In 2004 Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University and the following year undertook Honours in Classical Studies at Adelaide University. She is currently undertaking her Master of Archaeology as a part-time student.
- Jenni Lennox – completed a Bachelor of Archaeology from Flinders University in 2006, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management in 2007. She commenced her Master of Archaeology as a full-time student in Semester 1, 2008.
- Emma Liggins – Emma holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education from the University of South Australia. She commenced as a full-time student in the Master of Archaeology program in November 2007.
- Kylie Lower - Kylie holds a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Anthropology) from the Utah State University in the US. She commenced the Master of Archaeology program as a full-time student in Semester 1, 2008.
- Jenni Milani - Jenni holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Arlington in the US. In 2006 she attended the Australian Rock Art field school at Oenpelli, and was so inspired by her experience there that she decided to sign up for the full Master of Archaeology program, commencing in S2, 2008.
- Faye Prideaux – Faye holds an Honours degree in Archaeology from Flinders University. She completed the first year of her Master of Archaeology as a full-time student in 2007, and has subsequently gained employment as a Heritage Officer working for South East Water - Utility Services ‘us' in Melbourne. She will continue with her Masters program as a part-time student later in 2008.
- Royce Richards – Royce is currently employed with QLD Main Roads in Rockhampton following his earlier employment as a heritage officer with the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division of the SA Government. He has previously been awarded a Bachelor of Archaeology from Flinders University and is undertaking his Master of Archaeology program as a part-time student.
- Clare Von Maltzahn - Clare completed a Bachelor of Technology (Forensic and Analytical Chemistry) at Flinders University in 2006.
- Autumn Wright - has just completed a Bacheler of Arts majoring in History at Montana State University in the US. She will be commencing her Master of Archaeology in 2009 as a full-time student.
- Hannah Young - Hannah completed a Bachelor of Archaeology at La Trobe University in 2005 followed by a Graduate Diploma in Education in 2006. She is currently working as a teacher at Wondonga Senior Secondary College and is pursuing her Master of Archaeology as a part-time student.
