Postgraduate Programs through the Dept of Archaeology Archaeology home

The Department of Archaeology at Flinders University offers both a general Research Higher Degree (MA, PhD) program, and  specialised graduate coursework programs in Archaeology, Maritime Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management, along with a Professional Development Program for students and members of the general public.

Repat ExcavationResearch Higher Degrees

The Department of Archaeology offers the postgraduate degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Arts (MA) by research and thesis. Students are able to undertake research in a wide range of areas, subject to the availability of a supervisor in the Department and approval for the research being undertaken. See the staff pages for areas of research interest and the thesis topics of currently enrolled research students.

Research Higher degrees are typically 2-3 years in length and involve the completion of an in-depth thesis on a particular aspect of archaeology.  The MA requires the completion of a 40,000-60,000 word thesis and involves two years full-time study or an equivalent period of part-time study.  The PhD thesis of 80,000-100,000 words normally requires three to four years full-time study or an equivalent period of part-time study.

Scholarships such as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) or Flinders University Postgraduate Award may be available to graduates with a good Honours degree or equivalent. Please contact the Scholarships Office for further information on funding for higher degree research.

For further information about a research higher degree in the Department of Archaeology at Flinders University please contact the postgraduate coordinator Associate Professor Mark Staniforth

Hawker LagoonGraduate Coursework Programs

Graduate Coursework programs are modular and allow you to specialise in various aspects of archaeology. They range in length between 1 semester full-time to 4 semesters full-time.  The coursework programs are intended to meet the needs of graduates in archaeology and related disciplines (ie maritime archaeology and cultural heritage management) who wish to extend their skills in archaeology, or to specialise in various aspects of archaeology. Graduate courses are designed to be modular and sequential, allowing students to progress from one course to another at their own pace and in a manner that suits their own situation.

What’s different about graduate coursework study?

Graduate coursework programs offer a wide range of opportunities that are deliberately designed to take you beyond the relatively straightforward research and writing skills you learnt as an undergraduate. Within the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management graduate programs, many topics are targeted to the knowledge base you need to acquire as a practicing archaeologist or cultural heritage management professional – including legislation and the legal and ethical frameworks for practice, field survey, recording and assessment skills, and site conservation and management expertise.

The most noticeable difference in graduate level study is the focus on workplace learning – working in a real heritage environment with practicing heritage professionals as part of your study. Both the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management programs offer a range of workplace learning options, including Directed Study projects (individual, mentored research projects with an industry partner), practicum opportunities in a heritage workplace (60 hours), and a Cultural Heritage Internship (360 hours of paid employment with a cultural heritage management employer). The combination of flexible topic choice with internship, practicum and individual Directed Study opportunities provides our graduate students with a firm grounding in research methods and concepts, as well as teaching transferable skills suited to a wide range of career paths.
