What to bring

Essentials

  • Hat and sunscreen.  Due to Occupational Health and Safety concerns, you will be asked to leave the site if you do not have a hat.
  • Sturdy work boots (not tennis shoes, runners, sandals or any other kind of light footwear).  As we will be working with and near heavy machinery, you will not be allowed on site during any excavations without proper field boots.  After excavation, and if the shelters are still accessible, you will not be allowed inside without proper field boots.
  • Sensible work clothes.  Again, because this field school will use heavy machinery for at least some of the excavation and backfilling work, Occupational Health and Safety concerns dictate what is considered appropriate clothing for people to wear on site.  You need to wear long sleeved cotton shirts and long trousers.
  • Blank field notebook.  You will need to keep this for every day of the dig.  If you forget it, or lose it, you cannot be marked on your journal notes for that day.  Journalling is not something that you can ‘catch up on’ later, so don’t turn up without one.
  • Pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, folder.

Optional

  • Any personal excavating gear—e.g. trowel, pen knife, etc.
  • Camera.

A light lunch will be provided by the Repatriation Hospital each day of the dig, but you will need to provide your own snacks and drinks.
