Overview

This topic provides direct experience in historical archaeological field methods, including general site recording, excavation, oral history recording, documentary analysis and artefact analysis.  The topic contains some lecture and workshop content, but will mostly be directed towards teaching students the in-depth practical recording, excavation and assessment skills necessary for professional historical archaeological practice.  Historical archaeology is the archaeology of local communities, so presenting archaeology to the public will be a focus of field school activities.  Students in the graduate level course (ARCH8304) may be required to complete an additional project or paper dealing with some specialized facet of archaeology and may also be asked to help with some of the more technical aspects of the field school.  A fee may be charged to cover costs for accommodation, subsistence and transport.
