Location

In 2007, this field school will be held at the Repatriation General Hospital in Daw Park, Adelaide, South Australia.

We will be excavating the site of World War II air raid shelters thought to still exist beneath the Repatriation General Hospital.  While we are not certain whether or not the shelters still exist, we will be concentrating on the site of the last known open entrance to them, which was still accessible in the early 1970s.  We do not know what we will find, but hospital legend insists that the shelters came complete with a surgical operating theatre and enough space for over 300 beds.  While the story of the operating theatre is probably just that (a story), the shelters were known to be extensive and may still be substantially intact below ground.
