Fieldwork at Flinders University Archaeology home

Instruction in DGPS, Hawker Field School, 2002 - Photo: Penny KaramanlisThe Department of Archaeology is one of the few departments in Australia that offers significant fieldwork opportunities for students in most areas of Australian archaeology (Indigenous, historical and maritime). Field training is a fundamental aspect of the Bachelor of Archaeology programme and our graduates are often sought after because of their skills in the field. Our graduates are actively working in firms, government agencies or undertaking higher degree research in every state in Australia, and we are constantly responding to requests from consulting firms for more graduates with fieldwork training.

As a department we are honing and consolidating skills competencies and assessment to ensure that our graduates continue to emerge from the programme, not only with the requisite core skills, but also with the flexibility to enter the workforce in either a consulting, management or research role.

An explanation of the different types of 'fieldwork' at Flinders University

Field topics are on campus topics aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and are usually worth 6 units of credit.  They typically run for the duration of a semester, though sometimes they may be offered in an intensive mode that is between 5-14 days in length.

Field schools are also aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and worth 6 units of credit, but they typically run in an intensive mode for between 5-14 days in length.  Flinders field schools are available at a range of locations around Australia and many are available to non-Flinders participants as a 'short course'.

Workshops are usually of much shorter duration than field topics, field schools and short courses, typically lasting for 1-2 days.

Master classes are shorter again, and usually run for 2-8 hours.

The Basic Archaeology Fieldwork Kit New

The Department of Archaeology has come up with a one stop tool kit for the undergraduate archaeologist. These kits come equipped with all of the items that a professional archaeologist requires in the field, including a map-reading compass, scale ruler, plumb-bob, IFRAO metric colour photographic scale and much, much more. The kit includes a lightweight, high-visibility backpack and one year ArchSoc membership, along with a broad-brimmed hat (not shown). Kits are available for purchase from the Department by printing and filling out the order form (PDF) and returning it along with your payment.
