Current Research Projects

Since 1998, Donald has been involved with a range of multi-disciplinary research projects addressing the bioarchaeology of skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites in Eurasia. Projects included the examination of Classical Greek and Roman settlements in Italy utilising remains from the Metaponto and Pompeii sites. This project was funded by a Large ARC grant to Professor Maciej Henneberg and Dr Renata Henneberg of the Department of Anatomical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide.
Overview
Donald joined the staff at Flinders University in mid-1990, following a two
year post-doctoral research program in Archaeological Chemistry at the Department
of Anthropology, Harvard University and a Visiting Fellowship with the Department
of Prehistory, Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University.
Donald's initial field training was in association with the Dolores Archaeological
Project in the North American Southwest. Subsequent to this, he has conducted
fieldwork in California, the Great Basin, Antigua, South Australia and the Northern
Territory.
Professor Pate was awarded two Australian Research Council (ARC)
grants for 2002-2004. A Discovery Grant with Dr Soren Blau (Australian National
University) and Dr Alison
Betts (University of Sydney) was awarded for the project "Nomadic or sedentary?
Determining lifestyle and subsistence of past populations in Central Asia using
osteological, bone chemical and genetic techniques". Dr Blau received an Australian
Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
A Linkage Grant entitled "The Adelaide
Hills Face Zone: Reconstructing the cultural landscape and sites of cultural
significance" (Hills Face Zone Cultural Heritage Project) involved Pate and an interdisciplinary team of Flinders academics
from Archaeology (Pam Smith, Keryn
Walshe, Susan Piddock), Cultural
Tourism (Lyn Leader-Elliott) and Geography (David Bass). In addition the following
Industry Partners were involved: Planning SA, Boral Resources, Tourism SA, National
Parks and Wildlife Service, Adelaide Hills Council,
Burnside City Council,
City of Onkaparinga, Tea
Tree Gully Council, City of Mitcham and Marion City Council. Dr Smith received
an Australian Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
Professor Pate edited Australian Archaeology, the journal of the Australian Archaeological Association (AAA), and was member of the Executive of the AAA from 1999-2005
