Current Research

Alice's research involves the cultural heritage management of material culture relating to space exploration, including terrestrial launch sites like Woomera (South Australia), Kourou (French Guiana) and Hammaguir (Algeria), orbital debris such as the Vanguard staellite, and planetary landing sites. In 2005 she convened a symposium on the heritage of Woomera. She is also writing a book on the archaeology of body modification, based on her PhD research, to be published by Blackwell in 2008.

Currently Teaching

Alice is in charge of the graduate course in CHM and teaches in both Archaeology and the Professional Studies course. In Archaeology, she is teaching ARCH 8014 Indigenous Heritage Management and ARCH8508 Directed Study in Cultural Heritage Management. In Professional Studies, she is teaching PROF2104/8001 Finding Money: Researching and submitting Grant Proposals and PROF2105/8002 Successful Tendering.

Overview

Alice completed a B.A. (Hons) at Melbourne University in Archaeology and Classics in 1986. For many years she worked as a consultant on projects such as First Government House, the Rouse Hill Infrastructure Project Stage 1, and the Narama Joint Venture in the Hunter Valley. In 1994-1995 she undertook research at the Donald Baden-Powell Quaternary Research Centre at Oxford University, which led to a PhD at the University of New England on body modification and the origins of symbolic behaviour.

In 2000-2002, she worked as the Project Archaeologist for the raising of the Awoonga Dam in Queensland, and trained six young Indigenous women in cultural heritage management. She was Senior Conservation Officer at the Environmental Protection Agency in Rockhampton in 2002-2003, and coordinated the first National Archaeology Week in Central Queensland. In 2004 she was a guest lecturer at the International Space University Summer Session in Adelaide. She joined the Archaeology Department at Flinders University in 2005.
