Tasmanian Projects
Tasmania was the centre of the shore based whaling industry
in Australia, with many of the station owners based in Hobart and Launceston.
Archaeological fieldwork under the direction of Dr Susan Lawrence commenced
in November 1997 with the excavation of the Kelly and Lucas station at
Adventure Bay, Bruny Island. A GIS database of Tasmanian stations is also
being developed at La Trobe University. This is the initial phase of what
will be a trans-Tasman database, taking in Australian and New Zealand stations.
Funding for the Tasmanian component of the AWSANZ project has come from
a La Trobe University Central Starter Grant and from the Tasmanian Department
of Parks and Wildlife.
